Abstract
Purpose : This purpose of the research was to examine the relationship between suicidal thoughts, hand grip strength, socioeconomic status, educational status, disease. Nation-wide representative data from the Korean national health and nutrition examination survey 2017 were used in this study.

Methods : Korean national health and nutrition examination survey 2017 were used in this study. 5,449 were analysed. For comparison between groups, cross-tabulation analysis and mean comparison were performed. Logistic regression analysis were performed to analyze the influencing factors between grip strength and suicidal ideation.

Results : The finding in the current study support the national and global literature on the importance of socioeconomic status in health. The lower level of education, the higher the suicidal thoughts, and according to the marital status, the higher the suicidal ideation in the case of single or divorced there was a statistically significant difference. The lower the income level, the higher the suicide intention, showing a statistically significant difference. The higher the age, the lower the educational level, and the lower the income, the higher the odds ratio of suicidal thoughts is statistically significant. According to current smoking status, suicidal thought was low in non-smokers, and there was a statistically significant difference. There was no statistically significant difference in suicide intention according to gender, age, monthly drinking, aerobic physical activity, and disease. Suicidal thought decreased as grip strength increased, and there was a statistically significant difference. Socioeconomic status, especially disease and handgrip strength level livelihood security were significant risk factor for suicidal thoughts. Theses association remained significant in multiple logistic regression controlling for all covariates.

Conclusion : Future prevention intervention efforts to improve suicide risk will need to take into consideration handgrip strength conditions. It is needed to explore the possible proximal risk factors and mediators between handgrip strength and suicidal thoughts.
